Do dogs get jealous? | MNN – Mother Nature Network

Bild
Whether it’s a new baby or the cute little terrier next door, there’s a good chance your dog doesn’t want to share your affections with anyone else. And it’s not your imagination that he gets jealous when you do. We often wonder if dogs feel complex emotions , but it’s a tricky question. The father of evolution, Charles Darwin, suggested that jealousy might exist in other species besides humans, particularly dogs. “Everyone has seen how jealous a dog is of his master’s affection, if lavished on any other creature,” he wrote in “ The Descent of Man ,” first published in 1871. Since Darwin made that observation nearly 150 years ago, scientists have been debating whether he was correct. Some argue that jealousy is a human-only emotion that we apply to our pets. But if you have a dog, you likely think that dogs can get jealous. Have you ever played with another dog around your pup? Or pet a different dog when you we’re taking a walk? Heaven forbid you brought home a new puppy or a new b

The 32-year-old Harington told Variety earlier this year that he sought therapy in his 20s . “I felt I had to feel that I was the most fortunate person in the world, when actually, I felt very vulnerable,” he said. And describing the last day of shooting on the series, the star said in a separate interview to Esquire : “My final day of shooting, I felt fine . . . I felt fine . . . I felt fine. . . Then I went to do my last shots and started hyperventilating a bit.” “Then they called, ‘Wrap!’ And I just f—ing broke down. It was this onslaught of relief and grief about not being able to do this again,” he added. Harington is married to “Game of Thrones” co-star Rose Leslie, with whom he tied the knot in Aberdeen, Scotland last year. Shocking footage has emerged of Sherpas hauling a frozen solid corpse from Mount Everest amid queuing chaos on the mountain which has claimed 11 lives in 13 days. Four Sherpas are seen heaving the rigid corpse over the ice, its arm sticks into the air and its knees slide along the ground unnaturally. The identity of the dead climber is  not yet known. The staggering death toll so far this season has been shrouded in controversy but government officials marking the anniversary of the first ascent said on Wednesday they had no plans to cap permits. The video uploaded by Rohtash Khileri last Tuesday said: ‘Sherpas are the form of a God in the mountains. We should respect them. And should also respect the mountains.’ Three Sherpas can be seen heaving the body – another off camera tugs on a rope – while the body is bent unnaturally and its arms sticks into the air unmoving The body slides strangely on its knees while its torso and legs are bent back by the way it has frozen In the dis

Microsoft’s Pro IntelliMouse returns as a modern gaming mouse – The Verge

Microsoft brought the classic IntelliMouse Explorer back in 2017, and now it’s going a step further today with a new Pro IntelliMouse edition. It has the same design as the classic IntelliMouse that became a status symbol , but it’s now geared towards gaming. Microsoft has upgraded the tracking sensor over the 2017 model, improved key actuation, and added a textured finish alongside a braided cable. This should all mean that the buttons feel more responsive when you’re playing games with this Pro IntelliMouse, and Microsoft is even letting PC gamers customize the color of the taillight to match their keyboard or other accessories. Microsoft is offering black and white versions, too. The sensor itself supports up to 16,000 DPI and a 12,000 fps refresh rate, and you can use Microsoft’s Mouse and Keyboard software to setup macros, remap buttons, and quickly adjust DPI. Microsoft’s Pro IntelliMouse edition first debuted in China late last year, and it’s now making its way to US stores. W

6 ways energy drinks can hurt your body | MNN – Mother Nature Network

Bild
The concept seems relatively innocuous. Get a burst of energy by drinking something out of a colorful can that looks an awful lot like a soda. But energy drinks have a lot more going on under that pop top. Here’s a look at some of the potentially harmful ingredients and some of the health problems that can result if you drink too many of the beverages that promise a buzz. A lot of the energy you get from an energy drink comes from caffeine. The quantity can vary widely — from 80 milligrams in an 8.4-ounce Red Bull to 357 milligrams in a 16-ounce Bang energy drink — according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest . Compare that to 35 milligrams in a 12-ounce Coke or 150 milligrams in a 16-ounce Starbucks cappuccino or 330 milligrams in a regular 16-ounce Starbucks coffee. A 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association says energy drinks are more dangerous to your heart than drinks with just caffeine alone. The study author is Dr. Emily Fletcher, d

Pod of pilot whales slaughtered for their meat in the remote Faroe Islands hunt | Daily Mail Online

Villagers on a remote Atlantic island turned the sea red with blood when they slaughtered nearly 250 whales and dolphins as the animals migrated north for the summer. The pod of between 150 to 200 whales could be seen being lanced with gruesome specialised hunting spears, colouring the water red and sending blood flying through the air as the animals were hauled ashore.  Fishermen on boats drove the pilot whales towards the shore during the hunt today in the city of Torshavn, the capital of Streymoy Island in the Faroe Islands. The slaughter was described as ‘brutal’ and ‘cruel’ by the Blue Planet Society campaign pressure group.  Island volunteers helped the fisherman pull ashore the pilot whales they killed as spectators gathered in front of the red-stained sea to watch the hunt. A group of between 20 to 40 white-sided dolphins are also thought to have been among the butchered animals. Fishermen and volunteers pulled on the pilot whales they killed during a hunt to drag them as

The ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Seattle-based Amazon, finalized her divorce in April and reportedly got a stake in the online shopping giant worth over $35 billion. That makes her the third richest woman in the world, behind Walmart heir Alice Walton and Jacqueline Badger Mars, heir to the Mars candy fortune. “Tremendous value comes when people act quickly on the impulse to give,” Bezos said in a letter posted on the website of The Giving Pledge, an initiative started in 2010 by 40 of the wealthiest people in the U.S. It involves billionaires pledging at least half of their wealth to charitable causes either while they are alive or in their wills. Kit Harington finding out about *that* moment in ‘Game of Thrones’ is destroying fans

Bild
Warning: The following post contains spoilers for the finale of Game of Thrones . You must know this by now. No one was more emotional about the fate of Daenerys Targaryen than Kit Harington. As seen in HBO’s behind-the-scenes Game of Thrones documentary, The Last Watch , which aired Sunday, the star who played Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen can be seen during the cast’s very last table read reaching the moment when his character kills his beloved queen . Whether or not you saw it coming in the show, Harington apparently didn’t, and it’s an undeniably stunning moment in the two-hour documentary about the making of Game of Thrones ‘ eighth and final season.  Mother of Dragons and fellow star Emila Clarke can be seen sitting across the table nodding knowingly, as Sophie Turner a.k.a. Sansa Stark sits beside Harington and throws a wry smile his way. It’s a highly relatable, emotional moment , that sees both Clarke and Harington shed a tear or two. It’s one that, like the series finale ,

Scientists Discover The Loneliest, Most Isolated Galaxy In The Entire Universe

The galaxy shown at the center of the image here, MCG+01-02-015, is a barred spiral galaxy located inside a great cosmic void. It is so isolated that if humanity were located in this galaxy instead of our own and developed astronomy at the same rate, we wouldn’t have detected the first galaxy beyond our own until the 1960s. Our corner of the Universe was gifted with a plethora of bright, nearby galaxies to light our way through the cosmos. The Large (top right) and Small (lower left) Magellanic Clouds are visible in the southern skies, and helped guide Magellan on his famous voyage some 500 years ago. In reality, the LMC is located some 160-165,000 light-years away, with the SMC slightly farther away at 198,000 light-years distant. Along with Triangulum and Andromeda, these four galaxies beyond our own are visible to the naked human eye. The spirals and ellipticals in our backyard showed us, a century ago, that the Milky Way wasn’t alone. This sketch from the mid-1840s is the first

Colour-changing wristband sends alert when a person is being harassed or sexually assaulted  | Daily Mail Online

A wristband which sends an alert if the wearer is being sexually assaulted or harassed on a night out has been developed by a student. Design student Beatriz Carvalho, 21, invented the discreet band and accompanying app which alerts friends and nightclub staff if a person feels they are in danger.  If the wearer finds themselves in an uncomfortable situation, they can tap the wristband to trigger the alert through the app.  A double tap will make the wristband light up and send a second alarm to bar and nightclub staff.   After suffering from an incident where she was harassed as a teenager, Ms Carvalho wanted to help potential victims and ‘educate perpetrators’.  Scroll down for video  A colour-changing wristband which sends an alert if a victim is being sexually assaulted or harassed on a night out could prevent attacks from happening. A Sequel To Alien: Covenant Is Reportedly In The Works, With Ridley Scott Set To Direct | Geek Culture

Not long after their merger with Fox, Disney heavily hinted during this year’s CinemaCon that Alien is a franchise that they intend to continue. Now, according to new reports on the matter, it seems that a sequel for Alien Covenant is in active development . In an article published to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Alien film, Variety revealed that “a third prequel, which [Ridley Scott] will direct, is in the script phase.” This news will certainly come as somewhat of a surprise for Alien fans as the franchise’s future has existed in a sort of limbo these past few years. Though 2017’s Covenant was a modest success at the box office, it still earned significantly less than Prometheus ( Prometheus’ US$403 million vs Covenant’s US$241 million), leaving the future of the franchise in question.
