You Get More Introverted With Age, According to Science

Bild
Even though I’m a classic introvert , it was normal for me in my teens and early twenties to spend almost every weekend with friends. Now, in my mid-thirties, the perfect weekend is one with zero social plans. I’m not the only one who’s slowing down socially with age. Take, for example, my extroverted college friend who ran through her contact list, making phone calls to chitchat, every time she was alone in her car. She couldn’t be without human contact for even the 10 or 15 minutes it took to drive to the grocery store. These days, as a 30-something, she’s content to spend most nights at home with her family. I haven’t gotten one of her infamous calls in years. So what gives? Do we get more introverted as we get older? Probably, according to Susan Cain, author of the bestselling book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking — and this is actually a good thing. Let me explain. Why We Become More Introverted With Age In a post on Quiet Revolution , Cain...

Macro Photos of Water Droplets Reveal the Overlooked Beauty of Nature

Bild
Macro photography is more than just close-up images—the technique offers a new perspective on the world, revealing the tiny and often overlooked details of the photographer’s subject. Canadian photographer Don Komarechka explores nature through his macro camera lens, revealing water droplets as miniature works of art. “All of these images are like little sculptures,” Komarechka tells My Modern Met. “Very temporary, and only become beautiful when seen from the right perspective.” Each image from Komarechka’s droplet series shows little spheres of water dotted across petals and flower stems. Through experimenting with perspective, the photographer’s stunning photos reveal how the flowers are reflected in the droplets’ surface. Although liquid, each globule looks like a floral glass paperweight or snow globe. “I’ve always considered the essence of good photography to be the combination of both art and science; the deep you wave that mesh, the more magical the results will be,” says Kom...

Watch Rare Footage of Whales Blowing ‘Bubble Nets’ to Capture Prey in a Vortex of Doom | Live Science

Blowing bubbles at the dinner table is generally considered to be very bad manners by human standards. But for humpback whales, it’s a necessary part of trapping their dinner; humpbacks blow streams of spiraling bubbles to form “nets” of air around groups of the tiny marine creatures that the whales eat.  Recently, researchers captured rare footage of this incredible sight, using cameras flying overhead and attached to feeding whales in waters near southeastern Alaska. Airborne drone cameras hovering over humpback whales peered down at bubble trails as they rose up through the water, producing circular pens. At the same time, cameras worn by the whales showed what the net-building looked like from below the water’s surface. As the whales exhaled bubbles, the animals swam in circles around their prey, creating an enclosing bubble wall to trap small fish and crustaceans, representatives of the University of Hawai’i (UH) at Mānoa said in a statement . Once a bubble net surrounded ...
