You Get More Introverted With Age, According to Science

Bild
Even though I’m a classic introvert , it was normal for me in my teens and early twenties to spend almost every weekend with friends. Now, in my mid-thirties, the perfect weekend is one with zero social plans. I’m not the only one who’s slowing down socially with age. Take, for example, my extroverted college friend who ran through her contact list, making phone calls to chitchat, every time she was alone in her car. She couldn’t be without human contact for even the 10 or 15 minutes it took to drive to the grocery store. These days, as a 30-something, she’s content to spend most nights at home with her family. I haven’t gotten one of her infamous calls in years. So what gives? Do we get more introverted as we get older? Probably, according to Susan Cain, author of the bestselling book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking — and this is actually a good thing. Let me explain. Why We Become More Introverted With Age In a post on Quiet Revolution , Cain...

Macro Photos of Water Droplets Reveal the Overlooked Beauty of Nature

Bild
Macro photography is more than just close-up images—the technique offers a new perspective on the world, revealing the tiny and often overlooked details of the photographer’s subject. Canadian photographer Don Komarechka explores nature through his macro camera lens, revealing water droplets as miniature works of art. “All of these images are like little sculptures,” Komarechka tells My Modern Met. “Very temporary, and only become beautiful when seen from the right perspective.” Each image from Komarechka’s droplet series shows little spheres of water dotted across petals and flower stems. Through experimenting with perspective, the photographer’s stunning photos reveal how the flowers are reflected in the droplets’ surface. Although liquid, each globule looks like a floral glass paperweight or snow globe. “I’ve always considered the essence of good photography to be the combination of both art and science; the deep you wave that mesh, the more magical the results will be,” says Kom...

Astronomers discover 83 supermassive black holes at the edge of the universe – CNET

A team of international astronomers have been hunting for ancient, supermassive black holes — and they’ve hit the motherlode, discovering 83 previously unknown quasars. The universe is full of supermassive black holes, monstrous versions of the humble, everyday black hole, containing masses millions or billions of times that of our sun. These huge cosmic beasts generate mammoth gravitational effects, so you often find supermassive black holes hiding out at the center of galaxies, orbited by billions of stars. That’s exactly what happens in our home galaxy of the Milky Way. To find them lurking out in the distant parts of the universe, you need to study the light of accreting gases that swirl around them. Because we can’t see a black hole, but we can see the light, we designate these powerful light sources as “quasars”. Down the eyepiece of a telescope they might look more like stars — they are extremely bright — but scientists mostly believe their light comes from gases falling towar...
