Chinese scientists insert human brain gene into monkeys – CBS News

Scientists in China may have created a new kind of monkey — and with it, a big ethical dilemma. Researchers inserted a human brain gene into monkeys, in an experiment with the potential to cross the wires of human and animal intelligence. A study published last month in Beijing’s National Science Review journal describes the experiment, which is billed as the “first attempt to experimentally interrogate the genetic basis of human brain origin using a transgenic monkey model, and it values the use of nonhuman primates in understanding human unique traits.” The researchers inserted copies of the human MCPH1 gene, which is crucial for brain development, into 11 monkey embryos through a virus that carried the gene. Six of the monkeys died. The other five, though, showed apparent strides in their cognitive functions. According to the study, those five monkeys did not show much difference in their general behavior or the size of their brains. But they went through brain scans and memory

New Brunswick declares gonorrhea outbreak, blames dating apps and anonymous sex | CTV News

FREDERICTON — New Brunswick has declared a provincial gonorrhea outbreak, with a steep rise in cases being blamed in part on anonymous sexual encounters arranged through dating apps. Public health authorities say 96 gonorrhea cases were reported last year, compared to the five-year average of 54 cases. Another 20 cases were reported in the first quarter of this year, versus an average of 12. The chief medical officer of health, Dr. Jennifer Russell, says social media tools enable anonymous sex while making it difficult to track infections. Nationally, statistics confirm bacterial STIs are on an upward trajectory in jurisdictions across the country. Russell encouraged people having unprotected sex to get tested. “It is not unusual for individuals who have a sexually transmitted infection to have more than one infection at the same time. HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia are all examples of these infections,” she said in a statement. Untreated chlamydia and gonorrhea can lea

Australia feral cats: Australia is trying to kill millions of stray cats by airdropping poisoned sausages – CBS News

The Australian government wants to kill two million feral cats by next year — and it wants to do it by airdropping poisonous sausages. There are currently an estimated 2 to 6 million free-roaming cats across the country, and officials say they are threatening native wildlife populations.  According to the Australian government , the goal is to “reduce the impact of feral predators and increase the resilience of our native species,” because cats “damage the productivity of Australia’s farming sector.” The government wants to kill two million wild cats by 2020, which it says are a major contributor to the extinction of at least 27 mammals since their introduction to the country by Europeans, possibly in the 1700s.   Part of the plan to cull the rising cat population is to bait the cats with lethal sausages made of kangaroo meat, chicken fat, herbs, spices and a poison called 1080, which is deadly to animals, according to the New York Times . The sausages are dropped from airplanes int

The worst programming languages to learn in 2019 – TechRepublic

The best programming languages to learn in 2019: Top coding skills that pay you the most These are the languages that are in the highest demand and offer the highest salaries. While there’s no definitive worst or best programming language, if you’re looking to learn a language that’s in demand and with an active community, some are better than others. Codementor has compiled a list of languages struggling to attract developers or interest from employers. The so-called “Worst Programming Languages to Learn in 2019” list is the latest in the site’s annual round-up, with Codementor stressing the list reflects languages that are a poor choice to learn as a first language. These sorts of lists are always controversial, and one thing to bear in mind is you may not agree with the methodology used by Codementor, an online community for mentoring developers. The methodology used is explained at the end of the article. SEE: 10 ways to prevent developer burnout (free PDF) (TechRepublic) While the

Scientists Discover a Way to Dramatically Reduce Symptoms of Autism in Kids

We’ve long known that the human stomach can be a trustworthy indicator of our mental state, and vice-versa. Whether it’s a poor, nutrient-deficient diet leading to a groggy and depressive state or a grindingly stressful situation leading to a range of intestinal issues, the connection between the brain and the gut is both intimate and deep. Yet new research has revealed an ever-increasing number of remarkable connections between such problems as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and autism, and our stomach health. As the connection between the gut microbiome and human health appears increasingly multi-layered, novel solutions to human ailments have come to light–including the recent study by scientists at Arizona State University (ASU) that shows how a boost in microbial diversity in the stomach through fecal transplants can dramatically cut down on the symptoms of autism in young children. Not only does the severity of issues arising from Autism Spectrum Disorder

Most ancient type of molecule in universe detected in space | Science | The Guardian

The most ancient type of molecule in our universe has been detected in space, scientists have revealed, backing up theories of how the early chemistry of the universe developed after the big bang. The positively charged molecule known as helium hydride is believed to have played a starring role in the early universe, forming when a helium atom shared its electrons with a hydrogen nucleus, or proton. Not only is it thought to be the first molecular bond, and first chemical compound, to have appeared as the universe cooled after the big bang, but it also opened up the path to the formation of molecules of hydrogen. But while helium hydride was produced in the laboratory almost a century ago, it has proved elusive to detect in space, despite predictions that it should be present in gas clouds in which stars are born, as well as in gas expelled by stars as they die. “Although [helium hydride] is of limited importance on Earth today, the chemistry of the universe began with this ion,” the a

The Science of Motivation: Your Brain on Dopamine

Editor’s Note: This refreshed post was originally written by Kevan Lee in December of 2013, was revamped and updated for currency and comprehensiveness by Willa Rubin in 2017 — and again in 2019. I spent an hour on this opening paragraph. The hour wasn’t time well spent, mind you. Sure, I was working — writing, deleting, tinkering with words here and there — but my one-paragraph-per-hour pace wasn’t out of indecisiveness as much as a lack of motivation. I spent five minutes on email, ten minutes on Instagram, and fifteen minutes doing who-knows-what on Tumblr. (Just kidding, I know exactly what I was doing: watching cat videos.) Sound familiar? Motivation is a tricky thing to corral. Tricky, but not impossible. The origins of motivation (hint: it’s neuroscience) To trace the source of motivation, let’s begin in the brain where neurotransmitters spark chemical messages to keep us alert and on task. Neurotransmitters carry chemical messages that play out in your brain and affect the rest

Does Game Of Thrones even need Tyrion anymore?

Photo: Helen Sloan (HBO) Over the course of the last seven seasons of Game Of Thrones , Tyrion Lannister’s been a consistent fan favorite. He’s charming, witty, and criminally under-appreciated by his peers. He’s also, unfortunately, kind of worthless. As a new article from Matt Goldberg at Collider points out, the “game” aspect of Game Of Thrones has fundamentally changed since the conclusion of last season, which leaves Tyrion with, frankly, not much to do. As much as viewers enjoy having the quip-slinging, wine-drinking Lannister around, does the show even need him anymore? [Spoilers for the season eight premiere of Game Of Thrones below.] For the bulk of Game Of Thrones ’ run, the show has been about political machinations and palace intrigue with the looming threat of magical ice armies hovering somewhere in the background. This was the time for Tyrion to shine . He could play the game about as good as anyone else, and watching him weasel his way in and out of powerful peoples’ co

Trees go to ‘sleep’ at night, new study shows | MNN – Mother Nature Network

The next time you decide to take a midnight stroll through the forest, mind your footsteps. The trees are sleeping. That’s the fascinating conclusion drawn by a team of scientists from Austria, Finland and Hungary who wanted to know if trees followed day/night cycles similar to those observed in small plants. Using laser scanners pointed at two birch trees, the scientists recorded physical changes indicative of a nighttime slumber, with the tips of the birch branches drooping by as much as 4 inches towards the end of the night. “Our results show that the whole tree droops during night which can be seen as position change in leaves and branches,” Eetu Puttonen from the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute said in a statement . “The changes are not too large, only up to 10 cm for trees with a height of about 5 meters, but they were systematic and well within the accuracy of our instruments.” A birch tree at night (left) experiences more branch dropping than during the day (right). Scientists Might Have Just Figured Out Where Nightmares Come From

‘Assassin’s Creed Unity’ & art historian’s laser scans may prove critical to Notre Dame restoration — RT World News

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to rebuild the devastated building, even as some 400 firefighters were still battling the massive blaze. Meanwhile, billionaire Bernard Arnault, who controls LVMH, the company behind luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton, pledged €200 million to restore the cathedral, and Francois-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering Group, pledged a reported €100 million. Restoring the French Gothic cathedral to its former glory is a task that will take years if not decades regardless of the resources deployed in the endeavor. However, speculation online suggests that the work of a now-deceased art historian Andrew Tallon in combination with the two-plus years of developmental research that went into faithfully recreating the structure for Ubisoft’s game ‘Assassin’s Creed: Unity’ may provide some hope that the bold restoration project is indeed feasible.   I know this doesn’t help, but we have exquisite 3D laser maps of every detail of Notre Dame, thanks to the

Baby with DNA from three people born in Greece | Science | The Guardian

A baby with DNA from three people has been born in Greece following a controversial fertility treatment. The baby boy, weighing 2.9kg (6lbs), was born on Tuesday and both he and his mother, who is 32, are said to be in good health. The doctors behind the treatment, from Greece and Spain, say it marks a historic advance – it is the first time that an IVF technique involving DNA from three people has been used with the aim of addressing fertility problems. But UK experts criticised the decision to proceed with the treatment, which they said was not backed by evidence and involved unjustifiable risks. The experimental IVF treatment, known as mitochondrial donation, involves using an egg from the mother, sperm from the father and another egg from a female donor. The vast majority of a person’s genes – about 99.8% – are found on the 23 pairs of chromosomes that sit inside the nucleus in each cell in the body, and in the IVF procedure this DNA comes from the two parents. However, a tiny prop

Stationery Office Gets Giant Fire-Breathing Dragon Made of Paper for ‘Game of Thrones’ Premiere

Bild
If you’ve been keeping up with HBO’s series Game of Thrones over the past seven seasons, you know that winter is finally here. The eighth and final season begins on April 14, 2019, and people around the world are celebrating its return. Office stationery suppliers Viking Direct have gone well beyond your standard viewing party and are instead playing hosts to a giant dragon art piece inspired by the show. The freestanding, fire-breathing beast comprises 1,200 sheets of A4-sized paper and measures an incredible 43 feet long with a wingspan of nearly 20 feet. The Viking management worked with artist Andy Singleton in the production of the paper sculpture. To design the creature, Singleton started with a sketch and then built a small-scale model to iron out the three-dimensional details. It took him 100 hours in the studio to construct the sculpture—completed in sections for easy transport—and an additional 10 hours to install it in the Viking Office. The result is a fearsome beast

While some people can go days without washing it, others have to dig out the shampoo and conditioner every day to keep it looking fresh and shiney. But how often should we actually be washing our hair? According to stylish Julian Farel there’s no set rule and everyone’s hair is different but lots of us should be cutting back, reports RSVP Live . He claims our hair will actually be less greasy if we cut back on how often we use our favourite shampoos. How often do you wash your hair? (Image: Getty) He said: “If you shampoo every day, it will strip your scalp of all its natural oils and can lead to dry, brittle hair.” He recommends washing your hair every two or three days, but there are exceptions to this. Harvard scientists lead team revealing black hole – Harvard Gazette

To collect the data used in the black hole image, Doeleman said, the team gathered information from six locations — Antarctica, Chile, Mexico, Hawaii, Arizona, and Spain. By combining data from multiple places, researchers were able to build a system powerful enough to peer into the heart of a black hole. “The EHT observations require measurements of light received from M87 every nanosecond in order to properly sample the incoming high-frequency radio waves,” said Daniel Palumbo, a Harvard graduate student at the CfA. “We capture and freeze that light locally at each telescope. Storing that information requires hundreds of terabytes of space, shipped around the globe for later combination by a supercomputer. High-quality data from a wide array of telescopes let us form images that we trust.” Doeleman said the credit for the feat must be shared by the dozens of astronomers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates who worked for years to make it happen. “The group her

Twitch Punishes White Apex Legends Cosplayer Who Painted Her Face Black

Twitch has temporarily banned a Lithuanian streamer after she cosplayed the Apex Legends character Lifeline using blackface makeup. On Saturday, Karina “Karupups” Martsinkevich was streaming herself preparing her Lifeline cosplay in Twitch’s “Just Chatting” section to roughly 160 viewers. Martsinkevich, who had dyed her hair and put on a white shirt and surgical mask, then applied a dark foundation to her face to mimic Lifeline’s appearance. “On my stream, I wanted to show the viewers, how hard is to prepare for a cosplay, how much time the make up, costume and another details can take,” Martsinkevich said in an email to Kotaku . The final result of Martsinkevich’s cosplay is what’s commonly recognized as blackface—when a non-black person attempts to caricature or present as a black person. It originated in the 1800s when white actors used shoe polish or burnt cork, sometimes on top of highlighting their lips or other features, to perform exaggerated and racist stereotypes of bla

Israeli Scientists 3D-Print A Tiny Live Heart Made With Human Tissue | Health News
